5 Remote Production Tips For Your Podcast

Flow Riders!

Quick reminder: We are taking the month off of recording episodes, but that doesn't mean that the party has to stop. We are going to send tips to your inbox every week of July.

After 110+ remote episodes (Doc in Hawaii, Katie in Massachusetts, Luis in Florida), here's what actually works:

1. Zoom Beats Everything for Guest Comfort

Why it works: Everyone knows Zoom.

Pro tip: Use Ecamm for Zoom instead of interview mode. It's a more familiar interface and automatic redundancy recording.

2. Create Multiple Safety Nets

Never rely on one recording source:

  • Producer records the main feed.
  • Each participant records locally.
  • Zoom creates backup recordings.
  • YouTube saves the live stream.

Remember: The natural conversation gems can't be recreated in a re-record.

3. Walk Guests Through the Run of Show

Before recording, show guests:

  • What each scene looks like.
  • How long the episode will be
  • When they'll be introduced
  • What to expect throughout

4. Invest in Redundant Internet

For producers: Fiber + wireless backup + Speedify to bond connections = never missing a show .

Reality check: 50GB of weekly data is typical. Plan accordingly.

5. Use the Right Tools

  • Planning: Milanote for visual collaboration (or Notion for linear thinkers)
  • File Transfer: Blip for fast large file transfers
  • Storage: Compress old files with Shutter Encoder .
  • Scheduling: Calendly or SavvyCal

The Bottom Line

Remote production feels like going to a restaurant instead of cooking at home—you focus on the conversation while someone else handles the technical details.

This week's challenge: Set up a new backup recording method.
