The Art of Podcast Publicity: Get Booked & Build Your Brand

video preview

Flow Riders!

This week we had the pleasure of hosting Christina Lenkowski, founder of Publicity by Christina, who shared insider secrets on how to get yourself booked on podcasts (and why you absolutely should).

"The second any kind of money is exchanged, it becomes an ad. Publicity falls under earned media - no money exchanged, just value for value." - Christina Lenkowski

Why Podcast Guesting Matters Now

Authenticity Builds Trust

  • Podcast appearances are the most trusted form of marketing
  • Listeners hear the real, unfiltered you
  • You attract your ideal audience (and repel those who aren't a fit)

Relationship Gold Mine

  • Host relationships often lead to client referrals
  • Many hosts invite guests to speak in their private communities
  • Each appearance builds credibility with your existing audience

Media Consumption Has Changed

  • Younger generations don't watch traditional news
  • Content is consumed in snippets and on-demand
  • Podcasts allow for deeper, more authentic conversations

Pro tip: Even small, niche podcasts can drive more conversions than huge shows if they have your ideal audience. Quality over quantity!

Your Winning Pitch Template

The 80% (Create Once)

  • Brief credibility markers (4-5 sentences max)
  • 6-10 solid topic ideas you can speak on
  • Link to your media kit (nice to have but not required)
  • Professional signature

The 20% (Customize Every Time)

  • Host's first name (non-negotiable!)
  • Reference to their audience in their own words
  • Specific mention of episode content you genuinely enjoyed
  • 2-3 topic ideas most relevant to their show

The P.S. Magic Touch

  • Add a personal note about something non-business related
  • Reference something from their social media or recent content
  • Shows you've done your homework and builds human connection

Remember: Hosts are busy! Make it easy for them to say yes by providing clear topics they can visualize for their audience. We just hosted a media kit workshop for FREE. Click here and watch the replay.

Post-Interview Etiquette

Share, Share, Share

  • Post on all your social channels when the episode drops
  • Include the episode in your newsletter
  • Add it to your website with backlinks to the host

Go the Extra Mile

  • Offer to do a quick Instagram/LinkedIn Live with the host to promote
  • Create a blog post about your appearance
  • Tag and thank the host in all your promotions

Red Flags to Avoid

  • Never pay to be a guest (this makes it an ad, not publicity)
  • Don't pitch shows without listening first
  • Avoid the "spray and pray" method of identical pitches

Pro tip: Use AI tools like "Chatty G" (Doc's nickname for ChatGPT) to analyze episodes and identify content gaps you could fill, but always add your personal touch!

Podcast guesting isn't about talking about yourself for 30 minutes (that would be boring!). It's about providing genuine value to the audience while naturally building your authority and relationships.

The barriers to podcast publicity have never been lower. With a thoughtful approach and authentic engagement, you can leverage other people's audiences to grow your own.

Doc + Katie
