Aloha Flow Rider,
Ever feel like your content is getting messier the more you try to improve it?
More tools.
More gear.
More “optimizations.”
And somehow… it all just feels harder? Yeah. We’ve all been there.
This week’s episode kicked off Production Month (bumpy schedule and all), and we got into one of the biggest traps creators fall into, especially when they’re trying to level up.
If you've ever frozen up before hitting record, this one is for you.
You're Making It Harder Than It Needs to Be
Doc said something that hit hard:
"The more advanced creators get, the more they simplify. The more beginners try to grow, the more they complicate."
Think about that.
Creators with millions of followers? They’re trying to make things easier.
Creators trying to get there? They’re adding more tools, more steps, more friction.
It's the same thing we see everywhere:
Photographers buying more lenses instead of mastering the basics. Streamers adding more tech instead of fixing their workflow. Creators chasing complexity instead of clarity.
What Production Actually Does
Katie summed it up perfectly:
"Production is what makes your content feel smooth, even when it’s simple."
It’s not about making things more complicated. It’s about making things more intentional.
And the biggest shift? Stop thinking of your content as “videos.” Start thinking of it as a show.
Why Shows Work
(and random content doesn't)
People aren’t just watching your content. They’re building routines around it.
Doc shared how he watches certain creators the same way people used to watch Law & Order:
Same time. Same setup. Same expectations. That’s what you’re actually building.
Not content, but a repeatable experience.
The Production Mindset
Here’s where production mindset comes in:
Add Structure (Even If It’s Loose)
You don’t need rigid scripting, but you do need:
- A clear topic
- A predictable flow
- A reason to keep watching
Even simple segments help like adding an intro, your main topic examples, and your takeaway. These can all be scenes in Ecamm.
Use Segments to Create Rhythm
Segments aren’t just for TV. They make everything easier.
Think:
- Quick behind-the-scenes
- Fun facts or trivia
- Recurring bits your audience expects
You don’t have to overproduce it, but you do have to signal what’s happening.
Let Your Tools Disappear
This one’s big: Your tools should not distract you. They should disappear.
If you’re:
- Panicking over your Stream Deck
- Struggling with transitions
- Getting stuck mid-show
That’s not a tech problem. That’s a practice problem.
This newsletter just scratches the surface.
In the full episode, we also get into:
- Why adding more gear often makes your content worse
- The difference between “creators” and people who actually create consistently
- How live production thinking can transform your videos
- Why practicing your tools matters more than buying new ones
- How to simplify your workflow without losing quality
- Real-world production lessons from events and live environments
